Neurology

What is Neurology?

Neurology is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, which encompasses the brain, spinal cord and nerves. When this system is damaged through injury or disease, impulses traveling from the brain through the spinal cord and ultimately to nerves, organs and tissues are disrupted. Even subtle disturbances of this vital system affect vital functions, including strength, muscle tone, balance and coordination. It is the task of the neurologist to pinpoint the source of the condition and prescribe a course of corrective treatment.

From early studies of nerve function in the 18th century to modern diagnostic tools including Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), neurology concerns itself with detecting, diagnosis and treatment of nervous system conditions including headaches, pinched nerves (including sciatica), chronic pain, disc disorders and spinal stenosis.

How are Neurological Disorders Treated?

Neurological disorders arise from a variety of sources including injury, disease, overuse (repetitive stress) or misuse which leads to inflammation and nerve involvement, even emotional stress can be a factor. Chiropractic manipulation to correct spinal imbalances which lead to subluxations (disturbances of body function, including nerves) is often the therapy of choice, and can be combined with physical therapy to correct postural habits and strengthen muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Adjunct therapies including heat, ultrasound, laser light treatment, prolotherapy (injections of natural substances to promote healing) and wellness counseling (diet, exercise, lifestyle) may also be added.
