Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is actually just a part of the normal aging process. Symptoms of degenerative disc disease include pain in the neck or lumbar area. This pain can be caused by loss of fluid in the discs, and by small tears or cracks in the tough outer layer, similar to herniated discs. The loss of fluid can cause the vertebrae to rub together and decrease spinal flexibility. Imaging tests such as X-rays can help our back pain experts determine the cause of the degeneration, and develop a customized plan to help reduce pain.
