Cupping Therapy is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that uses suction to increase blood flow. Traditionally, practitioners use fire to create a vacuum effect inside cups placed on the skin, but in our office we use a machine to create a vacuum effect that we can control. We place cups on sore areas (typically the back and shoulders) and use the machine to create gentle suction. This suction causes the skin to stretch and contract, which in turn causes blood to flow to the affected area and speed your recovery.
Patients typically do not experience pain during or after treatment, although bruising is typical and lasts for several days. Cupping therapy isn’t just for elite athletes – anyone who suffers from pain such as plantar fasciitis, lower back pain, and fibromyalgia may also benefit from the treatment.
Cupping is performed along with therapeutic massage. We offer both static cupping, where the cups are left in place for fifteen minutes, and massage cupping, where the cups are massaged over the skin.
