Injection Therapy for Joint Pain & Muscular Pain

At our Montvale, NJ facility our doctors offer two types of injection therapy: Trigger Point Injection therapy and Joint Injection therapy.

Benefits of Injection Therapy

If you have been unable to find relief with traditional medications or physical therapy, injection therapy may be a good treatment option for you. Unlike pills that can irritate your digestive system, injection therapy treats pain directly at the source and is not distributed throughout the body. Many patients report that they are able to perform everyday activities without interference from pain.

About Joint Injection Therapy for Arthritis (Viscosupplementation or Corticosteroid injections)

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease experienced by over 10 million people. OA wears away the cushioning tissue, or cartilage, of the knee joint and causes the thick lubricating fluid to become thinner and less effective. When the deterioration of cartilage becomes severe, the bones grind together and cause pain and stiffness. Viscosupplementation is the process of injecting hyaluronic acid into the joints in order to supplement the lubricating fluid and reduce stress on the joints. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural, gel-like substance that is naturally found in the joints to provide cushioning and protection. This can provide relief for up to six months.

Sometimes, we also recommend corticosteroid injections (also known as cortisone shots) which reduce inflammation in the joint. This does not add cushioning to the joints, but can be an effective way to relieve pain.

In both cases, we use ultrasound to locate the precise cause of your pain so we can deliver relief right to the source – without guesswork.

About Trigger Point Injection Therapy (TPI)

Trigger points are “knots” that form in the fibers of the muscle, which cause tension, muscle spasms, and severe pain. Discomfort stemming from trigger points is often found in areas away from the actual trigger point itself, since the pain may be transferred through nerve pathways to different locations in the body.

Pain from trigger points can be treated with trigger point injection therapy (TPI), during which a therapeutic solution is introduced to improve natural healing processes so that the body can fight off pain and inflammation naturally.

TPI can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, other traditional pain remedies. The procedure is minimally invasive and is generally performed using a very small needle, minimizing the patient’s discomfort.
